A business owners policy is a strong foundation, but it is not a complete insurance program for most businesses. These are the common gaps.

Workers compensation

Injuries to employees are excluded from the general liability part of a BOP. Most states require workers compensation once you have employees.

Commercial auto

Vehicles the business owns are covered by a commercial auto policy, not a BOP. Some BOPs can add hired and non-owned auto liability for employee cars and rentals.

Professional liability

Mistakes in professional advice or services are generally excluded. Consultants, accountants, designers and similar businesses usually need a separate professional liability policy.

Flood and earthquake

Standard property forms exclude flood and earth movement. Separate policies or endorsements may be available.

Cyber and data breach

Some BOPs offer a limited data breach endorsement. Businesses that handle significant customer data often buy a standalone cyber policy.

Employment practices

Claims from employees about discrimination, harassment or wrongful termination are typically excluded and covered by employment practices liability.

Knowing these gaps helps you read quotes. Start with the BOP overview and the business income page, then ask your agent which gaps apply to you.
